Author Guidelines
New Law Journal is a weekly publication reporting on recent legal developments. It covers all areas of law and offers hard-hitting independent analysis by experts in their field, together with the practical implications of new case law and legislation.

The editor welcomes articles that address new legal issues or developments, particularly those aimed at practitioners and containing analysis and advice.

GUIDELINES

  1. NLJ asks for exclusive first rights of publication for all articles (the author retains the copyright)—accordingly articles should not have been previously published elsewhere.

  2. The maximum word length is between 1800 and 2000 words (two pages in NLJ) per article. The minimum word length is between 900 and 1000 words (one page). Please do not submit anything between 1000 and 1800 words as this will have to be cut.

  3. The piece should not be overly technical, but practical and engaging.

  4. Wherever possible the article should be topical and relevant to our subscriber base (see below)—and should be practitioner orientated.

  5. If appropriate, tips and guidance, etc should be given.

  6. Please provide a short summary of an article’s most relevant points and/or practice points emerging from the piece which can be run in a box/ boxes alongside the main article.

  7. Law should be set in context; the article should contain analysis and comment.

  8. Articles are not to be used overtly as "show cases" for firms or chambers. NLJ does not accept advertorials.

  9. We do not run footnotes.

  10. Bullet points, etc, sub-headings and tables should be used wherever possible to break up the text.

  11. The author should supply a short, punchy heading. The standfirst and bullet point signposts are written by NLJ (although any suggestions from the author are welcome).

  12. The endshot should consist of the name of the author and firm/chambers. It is taken as read that the author is a specialist in the area s/he is writing on. E-mail addresses/websites can be listed.

  13. When writing about a recent case and comparing it with past cases please ensure that the most recent case is mentioned first.

  14. Articles from pupil barristers/students/trainee solicitors will NOT be accepted unless co-written with someone suitably qualified, ie legally trained or an academic in the legal field.

  15. Once an article is accepted for publication NLJ sends authors a contract, which must be signed and returned as soon as possible.

  16. NLJ retains full editorial control pursuant to the terms in the contract.

  17. Authors are faxed or e-mailed proofs for their approval and corrections etc.

  18. Cases should include full citations, preferably with an All ER reference. If a case is unreported please provide the hearing date.

  19. When typing your article, please only include one space after a full stop.
